English Topos

Where to find an English guidebook once you land — because buying one before your trip is nearly impossible.

Japan is home to world-class bouldering at Mizugaki, Ogawayama, and Mitake. But for visiting climbers, one of the biggest hurdles is finding an English topo. Since it's hard to buy Japanese guidebooks overseas, your best bet is to grab one at a local climbing shop or gym after you arrive.

1. WHAT'S AVAILABLE

English & bilingual topos

Compared to Western crags, English topos are still rare in Japan — but a few solid ones exist, and we're slowly compiling more of our own beta for release. In the meantime:

Mizugaki & Ogawayama"Mizugaki Bouldering Area Guide" and "Ogawayama Bouldering Area Guide." The Mizugaki edition is Japan's first full-scale English climbing guidebook, with detailed beta and photography.
MitakeThe bilingual "Mitake Area Bouldering Guide," published by Daihold — a lifesaver if you're taking the train from Tokyo.
Okinawa"AGA — A Climbing Guide for Okinawa," the island's first comprehensive English guidebook for rock climbers.
2. WHERE TO BUY — TOP 3 SPOTS
